When I first saw that I was going to be required to take freshmen seminar. I thought to myself this must be some type of class where students learn how to be on there own and excel in college. A step by step guide on how to succeed sense most of us were new to college. I quickly learned that is not what it was and that it served a better purpose. For my the class serve as a black history type of class which I never had while I was in school. I learned about more African and African American history in a few week in that class than I did all of high school. I heard very educated people speak about the things they do in there careers opening up possible career choices for students in the class and we had a new guest speaker each week. Some were giving the chance to go for new york city for the first time ever. We went there to see the African burial ground which was mind blowing. This is another artifact that I did not know existed. Learned the story from the African burial ground buried the myth that most ppl still believe which is there were never slaves in the south just the north.  Things like this is what made the class so special and such a need for all students to take I think. I would truly not be as knowledgeable on my own history if I did not take these classes.

This semester I was enrolled in Freshman seminar. It is a mandatory pass or fail class that doesn't help your GPA. When I first arrived at 9:10 for the class I realized that even though it wasn't going to help me academically, it might help me in other ways. I was proved correctly as time progressed. The different lecturers that came to speak to us were all well esteemed in their various fields, and all have something important to speak about. While in this class I even got to go to New York to see the Ancient Burial ground. That I feel was the most powerful event of the whole semester. Being in a place with so much history was mind blowing. The project that we had to do was also something that I enjoyed. Mainly because while looking for facts to do the project on, I came across the Cradle to Prison Pipe-line. That discovery was awesome to me because it made perfect sense. Overall freshman seminar to me was a class that caused mental and spiritual growth.

Michael Carney Self Reflection

This fall semester I had freshman seminar on Tuesdays at 9:10. Every class was very full and we were expected to fill out a Mbongi which was 50 percent of our grade. At the beginning of the semester we expected new speakers each and every week. Usually the speakers talked about specific topics which informed us about certain topics. The topics were Learning, Wisdom, and The African World Experience, Abandonment, Dismemberment, and Reawakening: The History and Legacy of Howard University, The Eloquence of the Scribes, Practices of Freedom and Justice, Self Actualization, and Research and Methodology. After these topics we were put in groups for our final group projects. The project was about researching a particular topic and presenting it to the class. Our research question was: In what ways is knowledge generated by various fields of study used to develop solutions to human social problems and challenges? With this we used the “Cradle to prison Pipeline.” which we based our main research on. I believe the project was very hard itself and our group put in effort together to receive a great grade. In addition, we had to have a faculty interview which we spoke to a Howard University teacher and asked them specific questions related to our topic. This was mandatory for our final assignment and also contributed to our presentation. In addition, we traveled to New York which we learned about the African Burial Ground. We had a brief tour of the sight and pictures and videos of this discovery and the trip was very informative. When signing up for this class I knew ahead of time it was mandatory, however with this mind-set I thought this would be my least favorite class. Soon after each guest speaker, the trip to New York, and our final group projects I soon realized this class was a great necessity. To conclude I’m glad that Freshman Seminar was a mandatory class which better my perspective in a whole other level.

     This year, I was required to take a course called freshman seminar. In this class, we were expected to attend class every  Tuesday at 9:00am. When in class, we would often have a guest speaker that would usually present a lecture that was significant and informative. Along with that, the class also required us to complete a final assignment: a group research project. The project was intended to be a group effort that would involve sufficient teamwork. The team was expected to take the initiative of scheduling extracurricular meetings where they could work on the production of their project. The project followed the basic research question- In what ways is knowledge generated by various fields of study used to develop solutions to human social problems and challenges? My group decided that our human social problem that we would discuss was "the deficiency within the African-American community." In order to do this topic correctly, one would have to research the African-American community and the recurring trend that exists. We used the "Cradle to Prison Pipeline" article as a template for our research. After analyzing the issue that the article addressed, I concluded that the African-American youth seemed to be the most affected ones. From here, I concluded that the children are like this because of a lack of sufficient parenting and the absence of proper role models. Our project described the problems within the African-American community due to the inadequate leadership. The hardest part about this topic was the research and organization of the presentation because there was so many contributing factors and specific points. Once my group actually met up and began to work, the research project became much easier.
